A young person from the Land Down Under has faced legal proceedings after allegedly defacing a large blue sculpture of a legendary being by affixing googly eyes to it.
Amelia Vanderhorst, 19 years old, participated remotely at the local court in South Australia on Tuesday, facing with a single charge of property damage.
In a statement at the time of the September incident, the local council said that CCTV footage captured a person putting fake eyes on the artwork, which locals have dubbed the “Blue Blob”.
Ms Vanderhorst did not enter a plea and told the judge she was unwell, according to news outlets, with the magistrate advising her to find a lawyer before her next court date in December.
The following day the reported event, the local mayor said that restoration to the much-loved public artwork would be expensive as the stickers were impossible to be detached without harming the art piece.
“This wilful damage to a cherished community art is inappropriate and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor said in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is costly - it is also frustrating to those members of our community who have embraced Cast in Blue.”
She added the local government would pursue the “significant” repair costs from those responsible for the vandalism.
At the time the sculpture was first proposed, it received mixed reactions from the area residents due to its cost and design.
Priced at A$136,000 ($89,000; £68,000), the sculpture depicts a legendary giant animal, with the sculpture’s designers influenced by an ancient marsupial ant-eater found in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
