New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police released video stills Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries were reported.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
