It parallels of Stephen King’s offspring Joseph Hillstrom King’s new massive horror novel, in which a band of six summon the age-old, deeply sinister beast King Sorrow from the Abyssal Void to aid them in overcoming some villains. As one might expect, their supernatural ritual goes awry.

Acknowledging a Literary Heritage

Joseph Hillström King began his writing journey going to great lengths to remain separate from his well-known dad, using the pseudonym he still uses today and eschewing in-person meetings with his agent (he possesses a striking resemblance to his parent). Yet with this recent release, he embraces it. Several quotes that consciously reflect some of King’s most famous (that classic opening line); a scene that brings to mind a King plot point (a game of puzzles). In this epic story, Hill is delighting in his lineage, and we delight along with him.

Introducing the Central Figures

Returning to the group: five of them are scholars at the fictional the esteemed institution in this northeastern locale. There’s Arthur, bookish and gifted, deciphering ancient puzzles in his free moments; Colin, rich, astute, and inclined to bulldoze those who oppose him; Donna and Donovan; the stunning Allie herself. Additionally, Gwen appears, who remains outside their academic circle, but emerges as crucial of their band as they dabble, partly convinced, partly skeptical, in arcane arts.

The Fateful Ritual

Arthur is, as a result of external pressures, obliged to take valuable volumes from his beloved college library by a group of neighborhood thugs. This wounds his academic spirit, especially when he’s compelled to seize the institution’s prized and disturbing title: the logbook of adept the historical figure (condemned “for dealing with infernal entities in 1703”; the binding is made from his skin). Our Scooby gang read the journal, discover they could summon what the occultist details as a clever snake to aid our hero with his blackmail problem – and spend the rest of the novel enduring the repercussions. This ancient entity will certainly eliminate those troublesome local drug dealers, but they’ll have to choose a fresh offering every twelve months or succumb to the dragon’s wrath. As our protagonist states: “You plant seeds of destruction, all you get is additional horrors.”

Narrative Dexterity and Inventive Scope

Spanning forty years, Hill also moves with natural fluency between genres: as the friends endeavor to address the situation they find themselves in by, variously, choosing undeniably wicked targets to offer up, or seeking means to slay the beast themselves, we move between thriller to grim fantasy, clandestine torment to romance to horror. My favorite genre switch was to a quest story, deep in the caves below Cornwall, a part infused with the fantasy maestro that was magnificently horrifying.

An Expansive Canvas of Fear and Optimism

We encounter trolls – bridge-dwelling ones and online ones, genuinely frightening and perfectly brought to life. The story includes mystic weapons and deceptions, pulse-pounding sequences of bravery and instances of appalling malevolence, both earthly and supernatural. It stands as a masterpiece: a frightening tale that is above all a ode to the human inventiveness, and to affection and camaraderie. “We needed a story to believe and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says Colin as the allies gather at the table, making preparations to call forth their serpent into existence with the force of their minds.

According to Joe Hill in his epigraph: “This is dragon territory”. Ensure you experience it.
