The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

When I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from going back home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and being named best player.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his aggression, having been sent off early in his spells at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the main top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
