Vince Gilligan Shares He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the hit sci-fi show coming to an end—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Fan Response

It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.

“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.

The Central Mystery: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.

“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”

Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?

“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
