New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point in his run for office.
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.
"This decision rested on the security of my family and the need to directing my full attention on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers elected me on," Mamdani said in a statement.
He resided in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will always live inside me and my work," he said.
During his election campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment very different than his previous Astoria digs.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's original era.
The compound, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent outpaces the average income.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
